Dopravný podnik Bratislava, a.s. (Public transit company Bratislava, joint stock company) currently operates system of city public transport on bus, tram and trolley-bus lines. The basic transportation system on radial routes is formed by trams, which connects peripheral parts with the centre, or diametrically connects two radial routes crossing the centre.
The city public transport has been serving citizens and visitors of the capital city in various forms and varieties already for hundred years. It is part of living and constantly pulsating traffic organism. The first tram drove to the streets in 1895 from the SAV building on Štefánikova street through the centre up to the river bank of today’s Rybársky cech. Since then a lot of time has passed and a bus joined the tram in 1927 as well as a trolley-bus in 1941.
The basic transportation system on city radial routes is formed by tram, which connects peripheral parts (Dúbravka, Rača, Zlaté piesky, Ružinov) with the centre, or diametrically connects two radial routes crossing the centre. The unit line interval for trams is 12 min., but a tram arrives at the station every 3-4 minutes, because there are more lines in service.
The western mountainous parts of Bratislava (Kramáre, Koliba, Machnáč, Horský park) and eastern parts of Bratislava (Trnávka, Dolné hony) are connected with the centre through ecological trolley-bus transport. The peak trolley-bus interval is 8-12 min.
Petržalka is served by bus lines, but construction of fast tram is currently in the phase of project preparation, which will form principal system to serve the right bank of Danube through reconstructed bridge (Starý most). The construction works are planned for 2009-2011.
Other parts of the city are also connected with closer or wider centre through bus transport, which forms supporting transport in places, where electric traction is present.
There is a 60 minute transfer travel ticket valid in the city within which allows for travel and transfer on all lines of city public transport within the time limit. Besides the transfer ticket there is also a 15 minute non-transfer ticket available. The prepaid travel tickets are divided into two tariff zones. The wider centre forms 1st zone, peripheral parts of city forms 2nd zone. Travellers with prepaid travel tickets for only one of the available zones can travel to another if the traveller marks corresponding one time (transfer or non-transfer) travel ticket after crossing the border of the zone. Since November 2008 it is also possible to buy one time transfer travel ticket through mobile phone, by sending an empty sms to number 1100. Its validity is 70 minutes.
